About Mastering Her Role – Book One in Dani’s Erotic Romance Collection

Easily fifteen years ago, when Ellora’s Cave was coming online in a huge way, I thought about hitching my wagon to the shooting star that was erotic romance. I had an idea that involved offering the heroine lessons in sexual intimacy. I remember telling a writing friend that I was trying my hand and she emailed back, “Et tu Brute?”

That made me question whether I was writing the story for the right reasons, but I persevered. By then I liked the characters and was having fun, but I held off submitting. I was heavily into contests at that point and saw one where the final judge was an editor with Ellora’s Cave. I sent in my first three chapters and won! She wanted to see the full manuscript! (Although she told me to ‘get rid of at least half the commas first’) Still. Yay!

I had an agent at the time and was too embarrassed to show it to her. She sent it through without peeking, I got an offer, which was a contract without an advance, then... nothing. The contract didn’t come through. Stuff happened. Lots of stuff happened. Our personal lives imploded and I broke up with my agent and the end result was, I never signed with Ellora’s Cave.

I wasn’t sorry, though. I was a little bit sorry that I wasn’t published yet. That was always a frustration point for me, but I wasn’t ready to show Dominic to the world. He faded onto the back burner with The Healer and Hustled To The Altar because Mills and Boon were showing interest and they were my dream publishers.

After I’d signed my second contract with them, I started thinking about my back burner. Fifty Shades Of Grey was topping the charts and I figured the time was right. I asked my editor in London if she’d be interested in seeing Dominic and she sent it through to Harlequin E. Long story short, they offered a two book contract.

See Playing The Master for part two of this story. The stories are loosely linked. Dominic is friends with Porter and has a cameo with him in Playing The Master.

About Playing The Master – Book Two in Dani’s Erotic Romance Collection

In Mastering Her Role, Dominic is Jason’s alter ego. I always wanted to write a companion novel to go with Dominic’s story, one where the heroine has a secret identity. When Dominic was acquired by Toronto, they asked if I had another book to go with it. I said, I’ll write one. Because that’s what you say when publishers ask you to write books, especially after twenty-five years of them saying, Don’t bother.

I knew the heroine’s alter-ego would be named Violet and that’s about all I had. Seriously. Then I bit off more than I could comfortably chew with Presents and wound up with deadlines for October 31, November 1st (not kidding) and this second erotic romance due December 31st.

Two months to write a book. Not bad, right? Except I was promoting More Than A Convenient Marriage? and doing revisions on the other two Presents. Did I mention I was working full time? I took Christmas Day off, but otherwise I was glued to my computer. Somehow I turned in the manuscript on time and I’m quite pleased with it.

Playing The Master is not a sequel to Mastering Her Role, but Dominic and Arianne make an appearance.

If you enjoy my sexier books, you might want to try A Debt Paid In Passion, The Ultimate Seduction, or my as yet untitled Chatsfield short.

About Dani Collins

Dani Collins grew up in Maple Ridge, a suburb of Vancouver, when it was still a small town. With a father and both grandfathers switching up between logging and fishing, she grew into a quintessential BC girl: green, natural, and impervious to rain. Despite a lot of canning and hanging of laundry in her childhood, Dani has a habit of leaping into the unknown, which she credits to her ancestor, Samuel Robertson, a boatwright from Scotland who pioneered Maple Ridge and traded furs to the Hudson’s Bay Company in Fort Langley. Given this adventurer’s blood, she’s always been drawn to stories about people braving life in faraway lands.
