Now she understood why she was being questioned again. It was the same questions.

Note From Dani

I tripped and fell into this anthology by accident. I’d just signed with Champagne and new, more experienced authors there suggested a collection of shorts to draw readers to our work. It seemed too wonderful an opportunity to skip. I RSVP’d yes, even though I’d never written anything shorter than fifty thousand words. They wanted about five thousand.

It should be noted that the whole point of this short story was to provide a taste of my other Champagne book, The Healer. The one that ran well over a hundred thousand words. It’s an epic fantasy, all about world-building. Um, I’m verbose, people. Also, the way it was initially structured, I couldn’t actually use my characters from The Healer.

Somehow I squeezed Heart Of A Rebel into the word count by stripping down a story idea I’d had that might yet be resurrected the way I originally intended: as a time travel in a hair salon.

I’d love to go back and expand Heart Of A Rebel, but time! Time, I tell you.

The Healer isn’t linked to Shared Whispers, but it has the same tone while offering stronger character development, deeper intimacy and expanded world building.

About Dani Collins

Dani Collins grew up in Maple Ridge, a suburb of Vancouver, when it was still a small town. With a father and both grandfathers switching up between logging and fishing, she grew into a quintessential BC girl: green, natural, and impervious to rain. Despite a lot of canning and hanging of laundry in her childhood, Dani has a habit of leaping into the unknown, which she credits to her ancestor, Samuel Robertson, a boatwright from Scotland who pioneered Maple Ridge and traded furs to the Hudson’s Bay Company in Fort Langley. Given this adventurer’s blood, she’s always been drawn to stories about people braving life in faraway lands.
